Kate Spawton Science with Biology
Support has been fantastic, the schools have been amazing and I feel I am more than prepared for my first year in teaching.
The course leaders provide so much support for everyone. There has never been a point during my training where I have felt I cannot approach anyone with any question or concern. - Kate Spawton, Science with Biology, 2016
We asked Kate to answer the following questions:
1.What have you enjoyed most about your time on the course?
Each placement has provided a fantastic opportunity to observe varying teaching styles and behaviour strategies. When teaching I have been encouraged to try new ideas and take risks in order to build confidence in the classroom, develop practical skills, behaviour strategies and create engaging tasks and resources.
2.What are your career ambitions for the next five years?
During the next few years I will be focussing on improving my teaching practice and developing engaging lessons with original ideas. Should the opportunity arise, I would like to take on a mentoring role to future trainees.
3.Why did you choose Leeds SCITT?
This pathway allowed me to be immersed into school life from the start. During placements I have had the opportunity to train with PGCE students who have said if they had to choose again, they would take the SCITT pathway as the time spent in school has been more beneficial than spending the first 12 weeks at university.
4.What are the unique selling points about Leeds SCITT?
The course leaders provide so much support for everyone. There has never been a point during my training where I have felt I cannot approach anyone with any question or concern.
5.What advice would you give to applicants when they are deciding who to train with?
If you want to get into teaching, why spend the first 12 weeks at uni? By choosing SCITT, you will start in a school and cover the same training that is provided on a PGCE course but with the opportunity to get a head start with your teaching by preparing and delivering starters and developing assessment and teaching strategies. This means you are not waiting for “the first day” and you have confidence in front of a class, without the nerves.
6.Finally, if you had to sum up the course / your experiences / thoughts for a tweet (140 characters), what would it be?
The workload is not daunting if you are organised. All teachers have completed training at one point and understand exactly what you are going through. Support has been fantastic, the schools have been amazing and I feel I am more than prepared for my first year in teaching.
