Partner Training School

Cockburn School

As an Art & Design teacher, you will learn to recognise and nurture the creative potential of your pupils and provide each one of them with a wide range of opportunities to develop their creativity and learn new skills.  You will be supported by your Lead Tutor to build a deep understanding of your subject knowledge and tools for developing pupils’ artistic competencies.

With the in-school support, your Art & Design Lead Tutor will help you to shape your teaching to enable your pupils’ ability to work independently, question and explore.  Through the hands-on approach you will learn techniques to create a secure and enjoyable learning environment for your pupils, essential for developing their creative expression.

With a smaller cohort in comparison to other Art ITT courses, Leeds SCITT offers you a very personal training experience where you are nurtured and given the best tools to become a successful teacher.

I really enjoyed the hands on training and being based in a school rather than university. I've met some really great people and had lots of fun along the way

— Kirstie, Art and Design Trainee

From the Art & Design ITT School Lead Tutor

At your Leeds SCITT training in Art & Design, we will give you the tools and support to help pupils thrive with creativity: to take an idea, develop it and create quality pieces of work which they can be proud of sharing with others. You will have the opportunity to use the wide range of specialist equipment that Cockburn’s Art department has to offer, this includes glass and clay ceramics, screen printing, textiles, photography, casting and traditional materials.

The Art & Design Curriculum at Cockburn School is passionate about utilising the vocational approach to deliver key skills. The curriculum is regularly evaluated to remain up to date with professional developments and current arts-specific teaching approaches. Cockburn School’s provision in the arts has been awarded Artsmark Platinum status in recognition of the school’s commitment to, and excellence in, arts education. Artsmark is Arts Council England’s award recognising excellence in cultural education. It celebrates schools’ commitment to embracing arts across the curriculum and bringing creative learning to life for children and young people. Cockburn School and the Leeds SCITT programme are committed to ensuring the very best for the future of Art Education, by training dynamic and exciting new teachers now.

In addition to your Lead School placement, you can be placed within up to two of our additional partnership schools to give you contrasting placements.
