Leeds SCITT offers an Art and Design PGCE course with a difference: we aim to get you into the classroom quickly to learn with a ‘hands-on’ approach and to become an experienced practitioner. The course offers a unique opportunity to develop your experience in dynamic and supportive school environments, whilst allowing you to establish your own style of teaching.

Why join Leeds SCITT for your Art and Design Post Graduate Certificate in Education?

Leeds SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) is an exciting and innovative teacher training provider that offers the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for aspiring educators.

Our Postgraduate Teacher Training Courses help to provide the highest quality of teaching and learning, ensuring that successful candidates have the teaching skills and knowledge necessary to become outstanding educators and secure a successful career in the teaching profession.

    Professional Development through School-Based Training

As well as subject knowledge enhancement, this postgraduate qualification will give you school-based training and help your own professional development, building confidence in your professional practice teaching the Art and Design curriculum.

In your Lead School Experience, you will be introduced to a range of practical, research-informed strategies to help you to understand how best to teach your subject.

As you progress throughout the course, you will begin to implement these practical ideas and adapt them to fit your school context as well as to the needs of your learners, gradually taking more ownership and initiative on your placements.

How will I become a confident Art and Design teacher?

As an Art and Design teacher, you will learn to recognise and nurture the creative potential of your pupils and provide each one of them with a wide range of opportunities to develop their creative practice and learn new skills. You will be supported by your Lead Tutor to build a deep understanding of your subject knowledge and tools for developing pupils’ artistic competencies.

With the in-school support, your Art & Design Lead Tutor and school-based mentors, will help you to shape your teaching, to enable your pupils’ ability to work independently, question and explore.  Through this practical approach, you will learn techniques to create a secure and enjoyable learning environment for your pupils, essential for developing their creative expression.

You will be guided on how to plan and differentiate effectively, improving communication skills, so that you can make a significant difference to pupils’ learning, encouraging them to hone their talents and progress. You will have the opportunity to teach across a range of media, with access to specialist equipment.

With a smaller cohort in comparison to other Art and Design ITT courses, the Leeds SCITT teacher training programme offers trainee art teachers a very personal training experience, where they are supported and given the best tools to successfully teach art in the secondary education setting.

I WAS IMMEDIATELY MADE TO FEEL INCREDIBLY WELCOME IN THE ART DEPARTMENT HERE. THE TEACHERS ARE WONDERFUL AND GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SUPPORT ME. MY LEAD SCHOOL ALSO HAS WONDERFUL FACILITIES WHICH IS GREAT TO EXPERIENCE AS A TRAINEE.
